> Title : Launch of CST Campaign by Incursion Voyages

ECPAT International would like to congratulate Incursion Voyages for winning the prestigious Travel Agency of the Year award from the Association of Canadian Travel Agents and to thank them for their significant contribution to the international campaign to combat child sex tourism.

Incursion Voyages invited Beyond Borders, the ECPAT group in Canada, to compile a postcard to be included in the agency’s 2008 brochure, which is expected to reach an audience of 2,000,000.

> Title : ACCOR Training of Trainers

ECPAT International conducted training for 28 human resources managers and trainers from 19 hotels of Accor Thailand, a signatory company to the Code of Conduct for the Protection of Children from Sexual Exploitation in Travel and Tourism. The training introduced the participants to the issue of CSEC, in particular, child sex tourism and trafficking for sexual purposes and how they relate to the Code. The training also provided information on how to report incidences of CSEC and how to deal with suspicious guests, through role-play exercises and discussions. Participants also briefed ECPAT on current CSEC trends in hotels within Thailand.

ECPAT International and ECPAT Sweden held a press conference in Stockholm to increase media and public awareness of child sex tourism (CST), especially the involvement of Swedish tourists in CST. ECPAT also facilitated a workshop on the sexual exploitation of children in tourism at the Stockholm Criminology Symposium. The workshop focused on action taken against CST in tourist destination countries, emphasising the perspective of destination country NGOs and government agencies. It also discussed the involvement of European nationals, especially Swedish citizens, in CST and what action can be taken in Sweden to curb Swedish involvement. The workshop was attended by criminologists, academics, governmental and non-governmental agencies and interested individuals. These awareness-raising activities attracted significant media coverage.

ECPAT International and ECPAT Sweden organized a Seminar on CST aimed at Swedish Parliamentarians, which was presented by ECPAT International. The seminar stressed the importance of Swedish leadership at European level in the fight against CST and called for increased action when Sweden assumes presidency of the European Union in 2009. The seminar was attended by parliamentarians and other government officials, including the Minister of Justice.

ECPAT Sweden held a press conference focusing on the global child sex tourism situation as well as on the situation of Swedish child sex tourists. ECPAT Sweden’s Chairperson and ECPAT International gave a presentation and addressed the media: they were interviewed by two national television channels and three radio stations. ECPAT ran a workshop on child sex tourism for individuals working in the field of criminology at the Stockholm Criminology Symposium. The workshop focused on southern perspectives/methods in combating child sex tourism, especially by Swedish and other European nationals. The symposium was attended by criminologists and academics from around the world.

ECPAT International made a presentation to Swedish parliamentarians on combating CST from a European perspective: ministers and other government delegates made public commitments to increase action against child sex tourism. The following items were mentioned by the Ministers of Justice and Social Affairs as important areas of action:

• An increase in the number of extraterritorial convictions; and
• Work at the European level to combat CST, especially when Sweden assumes presidency of the European Union in 2009.


> Title : Executive Committee Meeting on Code of Conduct

ECPAT International participated in an Executive Committee meeting of the Code of Conduct. The aim of the Executive Committee meeting was to develop a policy for use of the Code of Conduct logo by signatories, local Code partners and ECPAT groups. A plan of action for securing further funds was developed and fundraising strategies were finalised.
