Overview : Founded in 1996, Beyond Borders is a volunteer grassroots movement of lawyers, members of the pubic and students that has been a member of ECPAT International since 1999 and has been given the national group status since 2010. Although Beyond Borders started in Manitoba, it now has members across Canada and is totally bilingual. Beyond Borders is one of the founders of Canada’s national hotline www.cybertip.ca. Beyond Borders holds annual bilingual Media Awards on Universal Children’s Day to honour those journalists who raise awareness on issues involving child sexual exploitation. Some objectives of Beyond Borders are to: promote the Code of Conduct in Canada to the travel and tourism industry, monitor the sentencing of offenders found guilty of cross-jurisdictional crimes against children; educate the public on the issue of child sex tourism and the dangers of the Internet and propose practical ways of ensuring child safety; advocate for law reform and for sexually abused children in the justice system, and raise awareness on the plight of children exploited in the sex trade and support initiatives to have them regarded not as criminals but as victims.
