The ECPAT International Assembly, which took place in Paris in November 2011, brought together the world's leading experts on protecting children from commercial sexual exploitation. This unique opportunity for mutual learning and sharing experiences focused on building global action, commitment and solidarity and involved 200 participants from 75 countries.

On the 24th of March at the 13th Session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva members of the Council agreed to start drafting a new international human rights instrument enabling the Committee on the Rights of the Child to receive and examine communications from children and their representatives alleging violation of their rights. The communications procedure will be established by a new Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child. To read the Resolution and Press release link here.

YOUNG PEOPLE PARTICIPATE IN RESEARCH:
UNICEF Innocenti Center is conducting a research project on Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children through Internet and other Information and Communication Technologies. The study aims to incorporate children's  views and recommendations into the research paper in particular in relation to the views of children regarding prevention and behaviour change that can impact on their protection.  They have developed a survey where young people can input. 13th session of the Human Rights Council holds full day meeting on the Rights of the Child with a focus on sexual violence
The special meeting taking place today, 10 March, in Geneva includes presentations by the special procedures (such as Special Rapporteurs) with mandates to protect children from violence and statements by child rights organizations in consultative status with the HRC. ECPAT International is presenting an oral statement in collaboration with other NGOs to the Council calling for more action to protect the rights of children from sexual violence in all its forms and settings. New ECPAT journal examines the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) for the sexual exploitation of children in tourism in East and Southeast Asia
Developments in ICTs combined with the travel and tourism industry are facilitating access to children for sexual exploitation by travellers. This study aims to analyse the nature, extent and trends in this subject area, and identify targeted recommendations for actions to prevent and protect children from being sexually exploited through tourism. ECPAT and The Body Shop launch new global report on sex trafficking of children and young people
ECPAT International and The Body Shop today released a global report on the trafficking of children for sexual purposes around the world. The report  - Their Protection is in Our Hands – The State of Global Child Trafficking for Sexual Purposes - revealed that the trafficking of children and young people for sexual purposes in many countries is increasing and governments need to do more to tackle the problems and protect children and young people. The report included a call for accelerated action around key goals drawn from the World Congress III. The key note speaker at the launch was Ms Najat M'jid Maalla, UN-Special Rapporteur on the Sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography. Fundraising bike ride through Southeast Asia ends in success

Fundraising Bike Ride through Southeast Asia
In April, two women, Corinne and Danielle from Boston, USA, will begin a three-month bicycle ride through Southeast Asia. The ride will raise money for ECPAT International and awareness about the commercial sexual exploitation of children in Asia and around the world. The idea for the ride grew from recent visits to Thailand, India and China, where the need to eliminate forms of child exploitation such as sex tourism and trafficking became apparent to the women.

NGOs call upon the Special Rapporteur on Trafficking to consider further child-focused provisions
At the 10th session of the Human Rights Council taking place today in Geneva, ECPAT International and three other child rights NGOs called upon the Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons , especially in women and children, Ms. Joy Ngozi Ezeilo, to consider additional child-focused provisions for prevention and victim identification, assistance, rehabilitation, and reintegration of child trafficking victims.  These include greater efforts to address and document domestic trafficking, and for special attention to be given to the root causes of trafficking, including the fact that many societies’ disregard children as active rights bearers. The NGOs also asked that focus be given to factors that make children vulnerable to trafficking, including lack of birth registration, poverty, gender inequality, discrimination, lack of education, inadequate child protection systems to prevent abuse, lack of economic opportunity. NGOs call for child rights to be integrated into all Human Rights Council mechanisms
At the 10th session of the Human Rights Council taking place today, ECPAT International and nine other child rights NGOs called upon the Human Rights Council to ensure that children all over the world fully enjoy their rights. With the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of Child to take place in November 2009, participants asked the Council and its mechanisms to contribute to this achievement.

The Human Rights Council was asked to effectively integrate child rights in all aspects of its work and mechanisms. This includes requiring member states to include the rights of the child in their national reports, particularly through consultations with child rights NGOs and child led organisations; ensure that sufficient resources are allocated to support such child rights mechanisms; and that discussions be officially reported in the records of the 10th session and used to improve the integration of child rights in the work of the Council. Prostitution of boys in India’s pilgrimage sites is pervasive, new study finds

ECPAT Italy opens recovery center in Laos to combat the trafficking of children for sexual exploitation
On 15 January, ECPAT Italy opened a recovery centre for children and adolescent victims of sexual exploitation - particularly victims of trafficking - in Savanaketh, Laos. The centre aims to prepare victims for reintegration into society by providing food, safe housing, health care, and psychological counseling, as well as training for career pathways designed to support future economic independence.

ECPAT lobbies for child protection online in Third Meeting of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF)

The third meeting of the IGF  was held in Hyderabad, India, on 3-6 December 2008 and focused on the overall theme of ‘Internet for All’. Participants from 94 countries took part. At the meeting, ECPAT International held workshop on Child Safety Online.
