> Title : Internet Safety Training Workshop

ECPAT International conducted an internet safety training workshop for school children from international schools in Bangkok, Thailand, in collaboration with the Church of Christ in Thailand. The one-day training updated young people on new trends in information technologies and how to interact safely with new forms of communications and entertainment. A separate session with parents was held to give them insight into the new mediums that are popular with children and how they can play their part in ensuring the safety of their children.

ECPAT International participated in the community conference of Second Life in Chicago, USA and actively engaged with key representatives from the NGO Global Kids, the CEO of Linden Labs (the creators of Second Life), technical experts and software vendors to better understand the inner workings of Second Life and related cyber initiatives and to increase the profile of ECPAT. A lot of interest was expressed by the participants in ECPAT’s work as well as a desire to liaise with ECPAT in this virtual space.

ECPAT Philippines inaugurated ECPAT I-Café Plus, an Internet shop launched as part of the Make-IT-Safe Campaign of ECPAT Philippines. Furthermore, they and Everything Online Inc. (EOL), a business franchise in the information and communications technology (ICT) industry implemented a joint venture to raise awareness of child pornography on the Internet and elsewhere.

EOL has committed to make its over 500 I-Café stations nationwide safe from all means of child sexual exploitation. EOL stated: “We want to maintain trade leadership, but we equally desire to take a significant role to combat child exploitation and maltreatment.”

ECPAT International conducted training sessions on ICT and Internet safety at a workshop organised by the Centre for Girls in Chiang Rai, with the help of ECPAT Foundation. The objective of the workshop was to train 25 representatives, including teachers and officials of 10 primary schools from the PAN district of Chiang Rai, on Internet safety in schools.

The training involved presentations, workshops and hands-on training on new ICT applications, such as social networks, blogs, instant messaging, chatrooms, the virtual world and other new forms of Internet applications. Discussions were held on methods of implementing and enforcing Internet safety policies and mechanisms in schools.

ECPAT International participated in a conference arranged by the Virtual Global Taskforce (VGT) in Washington D.C - together with law enforcement agencies, government representatives, IT industry officials and national and international NGOs - and played a major role in the discussions on current trends of online usage and how to stop the production and circulation of child abuse images. New initiatives were discussed by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) and VGT. An overall commitment was made from all sectors involved to enhance collaboration to stop such crimes.
