The primary, interrelated forms of commercial sexual exploitation of children – often referred to as CSEC – are prostitution of children, child pornography and trafficking of children for sexual purposes. Other forms include child sex tourism, and in some cases, child marriage. Children can also be commercially sexually exploited in other, less obvious ways, such as through domestic servitude or bonded labour. In these cases, a child is contracted to provide work but the employer believes that the child can also be used for sexual purposes.

Child sex tourism, paedophilia, incest, child sexual abuse – these terms are
well-known to many of us working to promote the rights of children
and to protect them from violation. ese terms, however, are often
used interchangeably and inappropriately to define what are in fact
very specific acts. As governments, United Nations agencies and
non-governmental organisations working to prevent sexual violence
against children and to assist those children who have been violated,
it is important that we understand clearly what we are talking about
when we use terms such as these.
